Nassau County resident Jonathan Diller, age 31, of Massapequa Park, was shot around 5:50 p.m., Monday, March 25, on Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway, Queens, said the New York City Police Department.
NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said Diller and another officer were conducting a traffic stop when he ordered the suspects out of the car.
One of the suspects refused to obey and pointed a gun shooting Diller in the torso, under his bullet-proof vest, Caban said.
Diller was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens where he died from his injuries.
The second, unnamed officer, shot the suspect in the back, the NYPD said.
The suspect was transported to the same hospital where he is in stable condition, NYPD said.
The second suspect in the car was immediately taken into custody.
"We lost one of our sons tonight, and I am heartbroken for his wife, family, and all New Yorkers," said NYC Mayor Eric Adams. " Officer Jonathan Diller was just doing his job in Queens, working to keep his fellow New Yorkers safe, and a senseless act of violence took his life — a senseless act carried out by a dangerous individual with a gun and a total disregard for our people in uniform.
"Let us come together in this devastating moment and pray for his family and our fellow officers."
Diller has been on the force for three years and is married with children.
Charges are pending, and the NYPD's Force Investigation Division is investigating the incident.
