Lindenhurst Schools Superintendent Daniel Giordano announced over the weekend that two students at William Fall Elementary School - both of whom live in the same household - and two staffers at Daniel Street Elementary School have tested positive for the virus.
Giordano said that the students were last in school on Friday, Nov. 6, and have been instructed to quarantine for at least 10 days, or until the Suffolk County Department of Health releases them from isolation.
“We have been in contact with the (Health Department), who is aiding us in the contact tracing investigation and are providing them with a list of probable close contacts,” he said in a message to parents.
“Unfortunately, because of the weekend hours, neither the district nor the local health department has enough information to accurately determine the impact of the students’ exposure to the school community.”
In response, the elementary school transitioned to remote learning on Monday, Nov. 9 as the investigation continues.
On Friday, Nov. 6, the district also announced that a second staff member at Daniel Street tested positive for COVID-19, which may have spread to “a significant number” of other staffers, who will enter quarantine for at least 14 days from the date of last contact.
Due to the positive COVID-19 cases, Giordano said that Daniel Street Elementary School will be transitioning to distance learning for two weeks, through Friday, Nov. 20, with students returning to in-person learning on Monday, Nov. 23.
“As always, we will continue to follow all necessary protocols and our custodial staff continues to work diligently to clean and disinfect all school spaces, so as to mitigate any exposure to students or staff,” he added.
“As a reminder, the symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to the regular seasonal influenza and include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath,” Giordano continued. “Some have reported additional symptoms, such as a runny nose, sore throat, nausea, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea.”
