The incident unfolded around 8 a.m., Friday, May 10, when police received a call for help regarding the unconscious man at 324 West Beech Street, in Long Beach, police said.
Once on the scene, police provided medical assistance to the man before he was transported to an area hospital for treatment, police said.
While at the scene potentially hazardous materials were observed by officers, including a beaker containing liquids and a working heat source, police said.
The beaker and liquids led to the discovery of the chemical lab in a detached garage which in turn triggered a hazmat response, police said.
"This is still an active investigation being investigated by the Long Beach Detective Division," the department said.
Presently, the Long Beach Police Department, the Long Beach Fire Department, the Nassau County Police Department Emergency Service and the Nassau County Fire Marshals Hazardous Materials Unit are on the scene trying to determine the type of chemicals being used.
The roadway is currently closed in both directions on West Beech Street between Laurelton and Lafayette Blvds.
