Smok-haus Pairs Smoked Meats, Wholesome Dishes In Garden City

Smoked meats barbecued "low and slow" paired with "wholesome" dishes is the hallmark of Smok-haus in Garden City.

The menu features brisket, pulled pork, ribs, shredded beef, lamb, porchetta, chicken, turkey, sausage, and wings smoked for hours on hickory among a blend of woods.

The casual restaurant with a full-service bar, in and outside seating, and a takeout counter, opened in November across from the old Sears.

Since opening in November owner Manny Voumvourakis said he's enjoyed a steady following among area residents and local workers from the corporate park at the location.

"We have some customers come in five days a week," he said.

Here's where you build a meal in the pick your pita or burrito sandwich, rice bowl or salad option then add the "protein" and topping. Options are plenty and include hummus, tahini, and tzatziki sauce, an homage to the owner's Greek roots.

Or enjoy your meat a la carte. The smoked meats are sold in any pound increments and served with pickled veggies and white bread.

The restaurant has several hearty starters like "Loaded Nachos" of tortilla chips, cheese sauce, pulled pork or smoked chicken, pico de gallo, sour cream and jalapenos.

Wings and porchetta area among the most popular dishes, said Voumvourakis.

"We use Meditteranean spices on the porchetta and smoke it for 15 hours."

A specialty on Fridays is the pastrami brisket. "We brine and smoke it on site. The brisket is very tender and has wonderful flavors," said. Voumvourakis.

"The plan was to offer the smoked meats cooked low and slow and have a diverse enough menu so if mom wants to have a salad with her protein and the kids want ribs and mac and cheese they have those options," he explained.

"I've had (customers) tell us the dishes are life-changing and this is the best barbecue they've ever had. It's been very humbling."

The secret to the eatery's success is to use high-quality meats, then season and smoke them, and cook them "low and slow and offer them with wholesome ingredients. We call it wholesome comfort food," Voumvourakis continued.

Howard H. of Flushing described the fare in this Yelp post, "The food here is delicious. The brisket was just the right balance of lean and fatty and smoked to perfection. Ribs were smoked just right and the meat fell right off the bone."
