Shortly before 8 a.m. on her final broadcast, Silva signed off with her final words, “Thank you. My story has more to it. God bless you.”

Silva called the situation “surreal,” but noted that her “heart knows that it’s time,” after the 65-year-old award-winning journalist was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer earlier this year after she announced her planned retirement.

During her career, Silva has won three Emmys and dozens of New York State Associated Press Awards. She’s also been honored with the Girl Scouts of America’s “Juliette Low Award,” to celebrate her volunteer work.

To honor Silva’s distinguished career, News 12 has renamed its studio, dubbing it the “Carol Silva Studio."

Taking over in Silva’s seat will be longtime reporter Erin Colton, who has been with News 12 for more than a decade, beginning as a production assistant in 2004. She’s worked as a writer, producer, morning sports anchor and then reporter.

"Nobody can replace Carol,” Colton said to News 12. “But I’m ready to bring my energy and passion for informing Long Islanders every morning, to the anchor desk. And no, I have not done my last snow angel.”
