'It's Time For Dad To Retire': Plainview Diner To Close After Half-Century In Business

After 50 years of serving locals and visitors alike everything from hefty omelets to Greek dishes, a Long Island landmark diner will close later this month.

The Plainview Diner, located on Old Country Road in Plainview, will serve its last meal on Sunday, Sept. 25.

"With the lease expiring it's time for dad to retire," said Pam Rooney, the daughter of owner John Papavasilopoulos.

Papavasilopoulos began at the diner as a dishwasher in 1972 and worked his way up to owner in 1990. It's the place he met his server wife Anna, and raised his two children who worked alongside their parents from a young age.

Rooney said her father is ready to retire and relax.

She and her brother, Nikko Papavasilopoulos, who own the Parea, That Greek Little Place in Huntington Village, plan to keep the restaurant juices flowing in their veins and carry on the tradition.

"We will be here," Pam laughed.

The original owner, Peter Kalamaras, Papavasilopoulos' cousin, still owns the building, but there has been no word yet on what type of business will try and fill the space of the beloved local meeting place.
