20-Year-Old Sleeping In Car Assaults Officers In New Hyde Park, Police Say

A young Queens man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted the police officers who found him sleeping in a car.

It happened on the morning of Monday, April 1 in New Hyde Park, according to Nassau County Police.

At approximately 5:40 a.m. that day, 20-year-old Raul Veingolea was reportedly sleeping in a gold Toyota sedan in the lot of an auto body shop at 2044 Jericho Turnpike.

Officers who found him said he refused to comply with verbal commands and tried to flee the scene, injuring the officers by being violent and combative.

Both Venigolea and the injured officer were taken to a local hospital.

After further investigation, authorities said Veingolea had also damaged the roof of a 2022 Honda CR-V located in the same lot before he went to sleep.

Veingolea, who is from Glen Oaks, is charged with:

  • Assault;
  • Obstructing governmental administration;
  • Criminal mischief;
  • Trespass; and
  • Resisting arrest.

He is scheduled to be arraigned at Hempstead’s First District Court on Monday, April 1.
