The events leading to the teen's arrest began just after 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, when authorities in New Rochelle were alerted of a vehicle entering the city that had previously fled from a traffic stop in New York City, according to New Rochelle Police Captain J. Collins Coyne.

The same car had also fled a traffic stop in New Rochelle just before 8 p.m. on Monday, according to Coyne.

Shortly after entering New Rochelle, the vehicle was found stopped in traffic at the intersection of Brook Street and Lincoln Avenue. There, officers were able to box it in and bring it to a stop without further incident.

The 17-year-old driver, whose name was not released because of his age, then got out of the car and was not able to give any identification or driver's license. He was soon arrested and taken to police headquarters.

A search of the vehicle he had been driving resulted in the discovery of 24 checks from the US Treasury made out to 24 different people that totaled $91,396.38. An investigation also revealed that a local resident had reported not receiving her Social Security check, which had prompted the involvement of postal inspectors.

After his arrest, the teen was charged with second-degree and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Anyone with more information about the incident is asked to call New Rochelle Police at 914-654-2300 or anonymously at 914-632-COPS.
