Roland Smith, College Football Player In Hudson Valley, Dies At 20 Roland LaShain Smith III of Montgomery died on Tuesday, Jan. 30. He was 20. The cause of death was cardiac arrest, which occurred while he was playing basketball, according to a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $10,000. He was born on Nov. 18, 1997 in Astoria Queens.  After moving to Middletown with his family in 2003, Roland attended Truman Moon Elementary School. He then attended Crispell Middle School in Pine Bush, and graduated from Pine Bush High School in 2015. Standout Goshen, OCC Athlete Brett Verdicchio Dies At 39 Standout Orange County athlete Brett Anthony Verdicchio died on Jan. 7 in Del Ray Beach, Fla. He was 39 years old. Brett was born in Hackensack, N.J., and raised in Campbell Hall, N.Y. He shined on the Goshen High School football team and was a star pitcher for the Goshen baseball team.  Brett graduated from Goshen High School in 1997. After graduating from Orange County Community College and attended St. Francis University on a Division 1 baseball scholarship. He lived in Del Ray Beach for the past 10 years.
