A community is pulling together to help lay an 18-year-old shooting victim to rest in Westchester as his family mourns his loss. Tamani Turner, also known as Tajohn, died on Thursday night, April 6 after he was shot twice in the chest in Mount Vernon on Garden Avenue just south of East 4th Street. A high school junior from Westchester was awarded a whopping $10,000 scholarship to go toward her future college education. Tamera Tate, an 11th-grade student at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy, was awarded the scholarship by the College Board in a ceremony held on Thursday, March 2, the school announced.
