White Shark Pings Off Long Island Coast
A 9-foot white shark pinged off the Long Island coast Tuesday morning, May 2. According to shark research center OCEARCH, the dorsal fin of Simon — who weighs 434 pounds and measures 9 feet, 6 inches in length — surfaced very close to the Bay Shore coast around 10:30 a.m. A "Ping" happens when an animal tag breaks the surface of the water, sending data, OCEARCH says. New Jersey's third-largest newspaper has attracted some national headlines of its own over an inflammatory photo caption. It was published by the Gannett-owned Asbury Park Press on Saturday, March 20, and deleted from the media company's website on Sunday, March 21. The offensive photo caption identified “a f–king hot nurse” administering a COVID vaccine. Westchester Man Charged With $150,000 Superstorm Sandy Scam
A 56-year-old Westchester man collected $150,000 in taxpayer-funded Superstorm Sandy relief by claiming his damaged Jersey Shore home as his primary residence, state authorities charged. The home that Thomas Aquilino of Yonkers owns on Baltimore Avenue in Point Pleasant that was damaged by the historic storm is actually a summer/weekend property, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said. His real home was in Yonkers when Aquilino fraudulently applied for and received the Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Elevation and Mitigation (RREM) funds, Grewal said.
