On Wednesday, Scarsdale police announced that Gretchen Reuter is facing a felony charge following a fight during the holiday weekend that escalated and she fled with her children to her father’s home.
Shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Scarsdale police received a 9-1-1 hangup call from Reuter’s Pinecrest Road home, before officers were able to reach her husband, who “stated that he had been having an argument with his wife and he was attempting to deescalate the situation when she left with their three kids,” according to the police report.
According to Reuter’s husband, she began drinking at approximately 1 p.m. that day, and may have had four or five glasses of wine over several hours. When her husband called the police, Reuter knocked the phone out of his hand, hung up and left with the three children when officers called back.
When responding officers arrived at the family’s home, they were told by Reuter’s brother that she had retreated to their father’s house with the children and hid her car behind the nearby Scarsdale Women’s Club.
Police eventually tracked down Reuter, who “was disheveled and distraught looking.” The report said that she was “uncooperative, had bloodshot, glassy eyes, her speech was slurred and she smelled of an alcoholic beverage.”
After submitting to an Alcosensor test, she was found to have a blood alcohol content of .29 percent, more than triple the legal limit of .08 percent.
During patrol’s discussions with Reuter, she allegedly became emotionally unstable, waking her children who came downstairs. Upon further investigation, patrol noted that the vehicle was parked in a “haphazard manner,” a window was left open, the doors were unlocked and an open 20-ounce can of beer was found in the cup holder of the minivan.
The family’s live-in au pair remained with the children overnight as Reuter was booked. Reuter was held on $5,000 bail and a request for an order of protection has been made. She was charged under Leandra’s Law on a felony charge of aggravated driving while intoxicated with children.
