Vincent Fleck was competing in Narrow Bay in the 500-meter swim, the first event of the triathlon, at around 7:30 a.m. when a lifeguard noticed he was in distress and brought him back to land using a canoe, according to a report by Newsday.
After an EMT administered emergency first aid, Fleck was transported by to a hospital in East Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead, the Newsday report said.
It is unknown if the death was caused by drowning or a medical event and the cause of death is being investigated by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
