Bits, Bytes & Bots Computer Adventures summer camp offers a program for children in the Mount Kisco, NY area who want to become filmmakers for a week, as they will learn critical 21st century technology skills.

“Make a Movie” program is one of their most popular technology classes, where children learn and have fun.

Camps start June 24, 2013 and are held weekly through August 23, 2013. During the camp, children combine the latest technologies, including stop-motion animation and digital post-production editing, with the fun of building with LEGO® bricks to produce LEGO Brickfilms similar to the popular videos showcased on YouTube. Using Stop-Motion Animation (SAM) software from iCreate to Educate, children ages 6 to 14 will capture still images from a webcam that can be played back in movie form like a digital flip book. During the camp, children will learn about developing creative story techniques and incorporating visual and audio special effects. Chris and Vivian Tai, owners of Computer Adventures in Westchester, were inspired by their daughter’s experience at Tufts University’s School of Engineering, where SAM Animation was developed.

At home, Chris and Vivian have 2 more children, who had been using Stop-Motion Animation (SAM) software as a presentation tool in their middle school and high school projects. The hands-on activity of creating films is used as a tool for having children demonstrate their understanding of concepts. By having students plan, explain, and create videos, it pushes them to become authors and producers of their own knowledge, rather than passive recipients of information. Following the camp, each student will receive a CD-ROM with all their projects, along with a trial version of SAM Animation® software and some resource files that were used in class.

Bits, Bytes & Bots also offers an afterschool program during the school year called “Stop-Motion Animated Movie Making” where students in third grade and up design their own sets with backgrounds, LEGO® characters, and scenery.

Children are encouraged to bring items from home, such as action figures or doll houses to enhance their scenes. Similar to the camps, students design and make movies. To learn more and sign up for camps or classes, visit www.bbbsummer.com.
