Muscoot Shows Off Vintage Ford Model A Wheels

SOMERS, N.Y. - Three pristine vintage cars were on display at Muscoot Farm recently, a number that could have been higher had the weather been more cooperative, said Mahopac’s George Bennett.

Bennett, who was at the show Sunday with his wife Olive, bought his 1928 Model A Ford, “off my uncle for ten bucks in 1960,” he said.

Original prices ranged from $500 to $1200, depending on the style. Bennett has eight Model As now and takes one out every day.

“This one hasn’t been out in a few weeks,” he said. “That’s why it’s here.”

John Reber of Mt. Kisco brought with him a 1931 Model A, which he purchased in 1965.

“You have to keep them moving,” he said.

Pleasantville’s Guido Poet said those who attended the show are all members of the Westchester Model A Ford Club. The club is planning an extensive show at Muscoot in October.

“We meet once a month at the First Presbyterian Church in Katonah. The meetings are open to the public,” he said. “You just have to have a general interest in Model A Fords. We have over a hundred over 100 Model A Fords in the club.”

The Model A Ford went on sale in December, 1927 and by February, 1929 two million had been sold. The 4-cylinder, 40-horsepower engine was water-cooled. Its top speed was about 65 mph and it averaged 25 to 30 miles per gallon. It came in a wide variety of styles: the coupe, the convertible Cabriolet, the convertible sedan, the Phaeton, the Tudor sedan, the station wagon, the taxicab, the truck and more.

The Model A Poet displayed was from 1929. It is only one of several that he owns.

“This is what keeps me going,” said Poet, who is 84. “They all have ladies’ names. This one is Bessie.”
