Among those who will offer comments about the issue at the Town Hall Meeting are:
- Daniel Berger, New York Civil Liberties Union
- Cathy Johansen, retired Peekskill Police Officer
- A young adult who has been impacted by the current criminal justice system
- Allison Lake, Westchester Children’s Association
New York and North Carolina are the only 2 states in the country that still treat youth offenders as adults.
According to a report, Criminal Justice Case Processing of 16 and 17 year olds, prepared by the Department of Criminal Justice in 2013, 46,000 16 and 17 year olds were arrested in New York State in 2010.. In Westchester County in the same year, 1,236 16 and 17 year olds were arrested. Of those arrests in Westchester, 70 percent were misdemeanors.
