Fire officials confirmed that at approximately 1 a.m. on Monday morning, a fire broke out in the basement of Sal’s Deli, spreading to several buildings nearby, including upstairs apartments, which collapsed, leaving local residents displaced.
The three-alarm fire prompted a response from nearby fire departments in Yonkers and Pelham. No injuries have been reported, and the Red Cross assisted the families that were affected by the blaze to find temporary housing.
As a result of the fire, nearby Nelson Mandela High School was forced to close for the day because electricity has been cut off by the fire department.
The fire was knocked down hours later, but firefighters remained on scene during the morning commute in the event of any flare-ups. Nearby roads were closed for several hours.
According to reports, the entire block of storefronts appears to have been destroyed by the fire. The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
