Weeks after embattled Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas was charged with grand larceny, his eldest brother is facing a legal battle of his own after being busted with alleged fake registration tags and marijuana during a traffic stop conducted by Mount Vernon Police officers on Wednesday.
Preston Thomas, 44, was stopped by officers shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning, police said, when the alleged falsified New Jersey tags were discovered. During the stop, four plastic bags of alleged marijuana were also recovered, according to court documents.
According to multiple reports, police were able to identify the false tags “because they were laminated and had a different font.” Thomas allegedly purchased the tags on East Third Street in Mount Vernon.
Thomas - an employee with the city’s DPW - was arrested at the scene and charged with a felony count of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. He is currently being held without bail.
