National Night Out is a nationwide program designed to bring communities together and strengthen ties between the police and people they serve. This year marks the 30-year anniversary since the program's inception in 1983.
There will be demonstrations by both police and fire officials, including the popular Jaws of Life extraction, where officers show how such an extraction works after an accident. There will be activities for children and adults alike, as well as tours of police and fire vehicles.
This year will have no shortage of food vendors serving refreshments, as well as giveaways and raffles. Police and fire officials will answer questions from the public and talk with residents in a casual setting.
“Having this event is a perfect way to encourage police-community relations, and to get out vital information that helps improve the quality of life in the city,” Mayor Ernest Davis said at last year’s event.
Local organizations will be joining the police and fire departments with displays and booths of their own touting the services they provide to the city. Expected participants include the Mount Vernon Animal Shelter, SPCA of Westchester and the Victims Assistance Services of Westchester Community Opportunity Program.
The National Night Out will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Levister Towers Courtyard. The event is free and open to everyone.
