Small Plane Hits Runway Light During Training Flight At Hudson Valley Regional Airport
A small plane struck a runway light at Hudson Valley Regional Airport during a training flight. The incident took place around 8:22 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the airport in Wappingers Falls, said the Capt. John Watterson with the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office. According to Watterson, a flight instructor and a student pilot were in the small aircraft when the plane struck a short runway light. No one was injured and the plane was not damaged, Watterson said.

NY Needs To Revisit Bail Reform Laws, State Attorney General Says
New York State Attorney General Letitia James has become to latest voice to speak out against the recently enacted statewide bail reform laws. As of Wednesday, Jan. 1, thousands of inmates throughout the state were put back on the streets due to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s bail reform legislation, which marked the end of cash bail for misdemeanor and non-violent felony offenders that were previously incarcerated. Two-Alarm House Fire Breaks Out In Area
Firefighters from numerous departments braved freezing temperatures and snow as they battled a two-alarm early morning house fire in the area. The fire started around midnight in the basement of a house on Chappaqua Road in the Lake Carmel section of Kent, said Lake Carmel Fire Chief T.J. Donohue. The family, including two adults and two children, were able to escape safely as firefighters arrived on the scene, the chief said. ID Released For Man Killed On Snowmobile In Area
A man killed during a snowmobile crash in the area has been identified by New York State Police. David White, 34, of Campbell Hall, was killed at 10:20 a.m., Monday, Dec. 2, after crashing a snowmobile into a tree on Quarry Road in Campbell Hall in Orange County, said Trooper Steven Nevel. When police arrived on the scene they found White near the sled, Nevel said. An investigation revealed that White lost control of the snowmobile and struck a tree and was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Nevel said White was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Some Syracuse University Students Leave Campus Early Due To Security Concerns
Citing safety concerns following a string of racist incidents and hate crimes, some Syracuse University students are leaving campus early before the official start of the Thanksgiving holiday break. This month, there have been at least a dozen incidents reported on campus, including racist graffiti, the shouting of racial slurs, swastikas posted and a white supremacist manifesto that was sent to students’ phones. A new report from Backgroundchecks.org named 14 Westchester County municipalities among the "safest cities" in New York. Background Checks analyzed the most recent FBI crime report and put together this resource, which shows that New York has an overall crime rate at less than half that of the country's. Overall, New York's violent crime rate is 24th lowest in the country, but the state is just 5th in property crime, according to Background Checks. A $119 million project to reconstruct a stretch of the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx has kicked off. The New York State Department of Transportation announced that construction has begun on the project in both directions of the expressway between West 161st Street and the Alexander Hamilton Bridge. The supermarket chain's parent company, Ahold Delhaize USA, announced in January plans to place robots in Stop & Shop stores to support efficiency and safety in the stores. Man Adrift For 45 Minutes Rescued After Falling Off Jet Ski In Hudson River
A man who had fallen off his jet ski and had been adrift for 45 minutes was rescued in the Hudson River. The incident occurred around late in the afternoon on Friday, May 24 off of Croton-on-Hudson. Officers Willie Saez, Isai Morreira and Kirt Maddocks of the Westchester County Police Department Marine Unit were patrolling the Hudson when they came upon an unattended personal watercraft in the middle of the river at about 4:15 p.m. They began a search of the area and requested the Aviation Unit to respond to assist. A rockslide has closed the popular Breakneck Ridge trail to ensure hiking enthusiasts aren't injured. The trail in Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve is temporarily closed as a precaution due to a recent rockfall, said Dan Keefe, spokesman for New York State Parks.
