The girls' basketball team was victorious in the Section 1 Class B quarter-finals on Tuesday, Feb. 18, defeating Valhalla High School, 59-38. The number-three ranked Wildcats will play second-ranked Ardsley High School at the County Center on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 4:30 p.m.
This season the girls went undefeated in their league and 15-3 overall; their coach, Sean Mayer, won his 100th game and the team is going to the final four for the first time in Westlake history.
Anchored by seniors Katie Schmid, Katie Cullen and Faith Lovett, the Wildcats were ranked number three by the New York State Sportswriters Association for Section 1, Class B.
Westlake's winter track 4x200 relay team placed first in the Section 1 Class B championships held at the Armory in NYC on Tuesday, Feb. 17. The relay team, consisting of Rob Soderquest, Mike Matute, Umair Azhar and Oscar Mellado, ran a 1:42:88 race, finishing a full 5.5 seconds ahead of second place Pawling High School.
Azhar also placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5' 6". A second-place medal also went to long jumper Rob Soderquest who landed with a 16' 11.5" effort and Peter Giannini, who took second place in shot put with a heave of 37' 1.75."
Westlake wrestlers junior Ryan Duffy and senior Matt Zefi placed third in the Section 1 Wrestling Championships held on Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14 at Westlake High School. Freshman Robert DiNota took fourth as did senior Jonathan Palmiero. Westlake's cheerleading team went to the 2015 Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 7 and 8. The team placed 10th overall in the small varsity coed division.
