Dymek Delivers Valhalla to Softball Title

NANUET, N.Y. – Kaylie Dymek is one year removed from Kensico Little League, having been a major factor in the majors’ softball team winning the District 20 title last summer.

The eighth-grader at Valhalla Middle School made it a second championship in as many softball seasons as the Valhalla varsity softball team defeated Rye Neck, 2-1, for the Section 1 Class B championship, Saturday, at Lake Nanuet.

Dymek doubled and scored in the first inning and her single to right field in the fifth scored pinch runner Kristen Colabatistto with the decisive run. Those were Valhalla’s only hits against Rye Neck’s Jessica Calvini.

“This feels amazing,” said the shy Dymek, who was a pitcher on Kensico’s title team last year. “I can’t explain the feeling when Sydney struck out the last batter for the last out.”

Dymek said she did not do well against Calvini when the teams played during the regular season. She did learn a valuable lesson, though.

“I knew her weapon was her riseball so I felt if I laid off that she would come right at me,” Dymek said. “When I got the double in the first inning, it gave me so much confidence because I made solid contact.”

Dymek would come home on a Rye Neck error in the first inning. In the fifth, she drilled a single in the hole, between first and second. Colabatistto, who was pinch running for Alyssa l.ombardo, raced home.

“I was just looking to hit a hard ground ball through a hole to score the run,” Dymek said. Senior captain Maddy DeMilio was happy for her teammate.

“Kaylie is a smart hitter,” DeMilio said. “She waited, was patient and she did an amazing job. I am so proud of her.”

Valhalla coach John Hayes agreed with his captain and expanded on Dymek.

“Kaylie hits incredible pitchers,” Hayes said. “Kaylie is in the two spot to move Maddy along when she is on base and when Maddy is not, she gets us started. Kaylie was absolutely tremendous today.”
