Junior John Philip and sophomore Kyra Hickey enjoyed mixing and pouring hot chocolate for their classmates. Charging $2 per cup, the Environment Club raised money for the building's beautification project and to purchase an additional water fountain.
The beautification project is a joint project with the school's Parent-Teacher-Student Association. The club, led by teachers Christine Cirillo and Jennifer Granich, will beautify the grounds by planting flowers and making the front of the building look pretty and well-kept.
So far, the Environment Club has laid down mulch and fertilizer and will plant bulbs in the spring. Work will be done to six beds in total - two at the front entrance, two by the library and two at the middle school's secondary entrance.
In addition, the Environment Club is looking to buy another water fountain for Valhalla Middle/High School. The building has three fountains - one purchased by the Environment Club, the second purchased by the Valhalla Teachers' Association, and the third purchased by the district. The fountains provide a spout for regular drinking, as well an area where reusable water bottles can be refilled easily.
Since the hot chocolate sale was a big hit, the Environment Club will continue it on Wednesday, Feb. 11 and Thursday, Feb. 12. A bake sale also is being planned for March.
