THORNWOOD, N.Y. Mount Pleasant residents will vote Tuesday on a $50 million budget for the 2012-13 school year as well as a contested election for seats on the Board of Education in the Mount Pleasant Central School District.
The adopted budget, which falls within the state-mandated 2 percent tax levy cap, for the upcoming school year includes reductions of $390,000 from last years budget with the elimination of 10 aides from the district schools. The district will also eliminate a section of first-grade due to a decrease in enrollment.
The estimated annual tax rate change for residents based on the current average assessed household in Mount Pleasant will raise taxes by 2.9 percent, or approximately a $260 increase.
Also on the ballot will be four candidates vying for three seats on the Mount Pleasant Board of Education. Incumbents Theresa Fowler, Jim Grieco and Vincent DAmbroso will be challenged by Thomas McCabe. Fowler is currently the president of the board of education and is occupied as a school bus driver for Royal Coach Lines. Grieco is currently the vice president of the board of education and is the districts board of education liaison for facilities. DAmbroso began serving on the board of education in 2009 and he is currently the districts audit committee chairperson and advocacy committee chairperson. This is McCabes first time running for the board of education. He is a 20-year resident of Mount Pleasant and was a member of the 2010-11 Mount Pleasant school budget committee.
Voters will have the choice of three candidates with the top three vote-getters being elected to a three-year term on the board.
Voting will take place Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Westlake High School Gym.
