Hand Grenade Found On Property In Westchester

A hand grenade was discovered on property owned by Westchester County.

The discovery occurred on Monday morning, July 29,  in Tuckahoe, Westchester County Police said.

The grenade contained no gunpowder and did not pose any safety threat to the public, police said.

The Westchester County Police Hazardous Devices Unit removed the grenade from property near Tuckahoe Road and Garrett Avenue that is part of the Bronx River Parkway Reservation, police said. The item was a rusted, inert training hand grenade that contained no explosive material, according to police.

A search of the immediate area did not reveal any other similar items.

The incident began about 9:30 a.m. when county maintenance workers discovered the device while mowing the property, said police. 

Westchester County and Tuckahoe Police patrol officers secured the area while HDU, known more informally as the Bomb Squad, responded.

The device was examined, found to be non-hazardous, and removed. The scene was cleared about 10:30 a.m., according to police.
