MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. For Westlake High School students, weeks of hard work on sacrificed weekends paid off Friday night as each class presented their homecoming week floats at their annual pep rally.
Weve spent at least four to five hours every weekend for the past four weeks working on this float, senior Kristin Ryan said. Weve worked really hard on it.
Four flatbed trucks rolled up to the high school with the float of each class on the back. The theme of each float was beat Croton Harmon, Westlakes opponent in Saturdays varsity football game.
The students took the initiative of creating the floats on their own time on the weekends at a students home. Ryan hosted the seniors for their construction and her mother Mary had nothing but praise for the group.
It has been so much fun working with the kids, Mary Ryan said. They are just a great group of kids.
Principal Keith Schenker said he was impressed with the large involvement of each student during the entire spirit week that led up to the pep rally.
This year there has just been a great general uniformity between each of the classes, Schenker said. It just shows how much pride they have in their school with how hard they have worked on these floats.
The float presentation took place outside of the high school before the students moved inside for the rally. The students then participated in a bonfire which warmed up the frigid night. Schenker said he and the rest of the Westlake community were especially excited for the bonfire as it was the first time in three years that weather allowed the school to hold the traditional homecoming event.
Although all of the students unified in Westlake Wildcats pride, there was still a little friendly competition amongst the grades.
We absolutely have the best float, said Kristin Ryan. Were the biggest grade, weve got the biggest float.
