The family of Chappaqua teenager Evan Lieberman, involved in an auto accident four years ago that eventually took his life after 30 days in the trauma unit, spearheaded the fund drive that helped build the center.

The new lounge is more than twice the size of the old one with more than 2,400 square feet, comfortable seating, multimedia touch points, showers, lockers, nutrition stations and modest resting accommodations.

As Westchester Medical Center is a Level I trauma center, the hospital often cares for the most critically injured patients, and their loved ones frequently stay at the hospital for long periods of time.

“Due to the unique nature of its services our Trauma Intensive Care Unit often operates at patient capacity and when it does, we host 15 patients with three or four caregivers at their side. That’s a lot of people spending extended time in our hospital,” explained Westchester Medical Center Vice President of Patient Care Services Linda McGinnis.

Funds were raised in a joint effort by the Westchester Medical Center Health Network and the Evan’s Team Foundation, eventually totaling over $500,000 to support construction.

“The added space and amenities offered in the [lounge] will provide extra comfort for stressed and worried caregivers while aiding them in their support of their loved ones,” noted McGinnis.
