The Feb. 3 accident caused town officials to conduct a study on whether they should divert traffic away from the crossing on Commerce Street in Valhalla. Carl Fulgenzi, the town supervisor, said that with such a major accident, "we've got to look at this," added the newspaper.
The town’s study of the potential closure was among investigation documents released Dec. 16 by the National Transportation Safety Board. The release of the documents precedes a report that will detail the safety board’s finding of probable cause in the crash, said the Wall Street Journal.
The report also noted that a traffic system that controls stoplights when trains approach “was not in compliance at the time of the crash” with federal guidelines, added the Wall Street Journal.
