PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. To kick-off Fire Prevention week, the Bedford Road School kindergarten students each received a smoke detector to bring home, courtesy of the Pleasantville Rotary Club.
"It's a great event for students to be involved in fire prevention and safety," said principal Peggy Galotti.
An annual event that first began in 1992, the Pleasantville Roatary Club has presented over 2,000 smoke detectors to Pleasantville kindergarten students since the first event was held 19 years ago.
Helen Grishman, a rotary club member who has been visiting Bedford for the past five years to deliver the smoke detectors to the students, said she enjoys the opportunity to get out into the community and schools.
"It's a wonderful experience having the chance to be a part of the safety of the children in our community," Grishman said. "Fire safety is a very important part of their education. Pleasantville's school district has been really accommodating over the years and I plan to do this for as long as I am physically able to."
The event kicks off Pleasantville's Fire Prevention and Safety Week. On Tuesday morning, students at Bedford Road School will enjoy a visit from the Pleasantville Volunteer Fire Department where they will show the students safety demonstrations, such as what to do in the event of a fire and also the many other aspects of the fire department.
Karen Cammann, a rotary club member, said it was her first year distributing the smoke detectors and it was an enjoyable and surprising experience.
"It's amazing how much they already know about things like stop, drop, and roll and safety measures," Cammann said. "I have to say it was an awesome experience, just seeing their faces smile when you hand them something."
