People dialed 911 to the Mount Pleasant Police in the wake of the accident, which occurred when a commuter train collided with an SUV.. One caller said, "The train Metro-North right at the Valhalla station past Lakeview just exploded."
"The train exploded?" asked the 911 operator.
"Yes, the front car just exploded," said the unidentified caller. "People are jumping out of the train it's in front of ... right past the Valhalla crossing over there."
At 6:27 p.m., the Mount Pleasant Police dispatcher called out, "I need you to respond. Taconic State Parkway by the train station. Report of an accident on the tracks. Headquarters, to all cars. I have reported as a car versus train at the Commerce Street crossing."
Four minutes later, a call went out reporting two people suffering with severe trauma. At 6:36 p.m., the dispatch call confirmed someone had died.
"We got one possibly trapped in the train," the unidentified dispatcher said. "Possibly alive. I got a D-O-A in the train as well. Multiple injuries. Trying to extricate everybody down now."
At 6:41 p.m., the dispatcher called for the third rail to be shut down.
