Mount Pleasant Tries to Cool Down at Town Pool

VALHALLA, N.Y. - With temperatures reaching the upper 90’s, residents took to the Mount Pleasant town pool in Valhalla on Wednesday to try to cool off on the first official day of summer.

“I’m going to try and keep myself out of the sun as much as possible and apply a lot of sun screen,” said Sharon Sermol, a resident of Pleasantville. “The pool is a good way to stay cool though.”

The Westchester County Health Department issued a heat advisory for Wednesday and advised all residents to avoid strenuous activity, drink non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic beverages, and to stay indoors in air-conditioning when possible. Shortly after noon on Wednesday, residents lined up outside of the Mount Pleasant pool waiting for the gates to open to hit the water.

Sue Seiascia, of Pleasantville, said she got her activity out of the way early today before lounging by the pool.

“I went out for a walk this morning at around 6 a.m.,” Seiascia said.  “Before the sun even hit the sidewalk.”

Seiascia said she didn’t mind the high temperatures, but was concerned about her pet.

“I worry the most about my dog,” Seiascia said.  “Even when I’m not in the house I need to leave the air on because I get nervous that they will be alone in the heat.”

For student Nicholas Ryan, a Thornwood resident, the hot day was a way to enjoy some time with friends after wrapping up the school year this week in the Mount Pleasant Central School District.

“I’m just looking forward to being at the pool and hanging out with friends,” Ryan said.
