The bear was spotted in Rockland County around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, at a home on Simkin Drive in New City.

"We want to remind everyone to stay safe and keep a respectful distance from wildlife," the Clarkstown Police Department said.

Here are some safety tips if you encounter a black bear:

  • Never feed or approach a bear.
  • Remain calm. Do not run; instead, back away slowly.
  • Make noise to alert the bear to your presence without startling it.
  • Secure your trash and remove any food sources from your property.
