A 16-year-old has been criminally charged with a felony in connection to a Westchester crash that killed a beloved longtime police sergeant and Putnam County resident. After a nearly 11-month investigation into a December 2022 crash that killed Yonkers Police Department Det. Sgt. Summer Months Can Be Deadly For Teen Drivers, AAA Warns
As the summer driving season unofficially kicks off, officials with AAA are cautioning New York parents and teenagers that distracted driving can be fateful as the “100 Deadliest Days” begin. AAA said that June is the "deadliest" month for teen drivers in New York, with the most cases of crashes in any month between 2015 and 2019, according to the University of Connecticut's Crash Data Repository. Crashes Linked To Cell Phone Use, Texting Nearly Double Over Last Decade
More and more drivers find themselves involved in crashes due to cell phone use, according to a new report. Accidents related to cell phone use has risen 86 percent in the past decade, according to a recently released report from TrafficTickets.com, which took a county-by-county look at crashes tied to drivers using cell phones while behind the wheel. In 2009, there were 650 accidents where the driver was using a cell phone or texting while driving. In 2018 there were 1,212 accidents caused by cell phone use, according to the website. With Memorial Day in the rearview mirror, AAA is cautioning that the holiday kicked off the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers on area roadways. Over the past five years, nearly 3,500 people have been killed in crashes involving teen drivers during the 100 Deadliest Days - the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day - when the number of crash fatalities involving a teen driver historically rise. Deadly Combination: Teen Driver Plus Teen Passenger Increase Crash Chance 51 Percent, AAA Says
Teenage passengers may be the biggest threat to teenage drivers, according to a recently released report from AAA. Research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that when a teen driver has only teen passengers in their vehicle, the fatality rate for all people involved in a crash increased 51 percent. In comparison, when passengers over the age of 35 ride with a teen driver, overall fatality rates in crashes decreased 8 percent.
