Rob Sternberg, like all umpires, plays an important and nearly-always anonymous role while officiating games. This week Sternberg has been singled out for a job he its says an honor as the lone Section 1 area umpire selected to work the upcoming New York State Public Schools baseball tournament in upstate Binghamton.
Ive been doing this for 15 years, so the fact that the Westchester Umpires association has chosen me means a lot," he said. "Im a longtime baseball guy. I love being around the kids, being there to do an important job. Its very satisfying.
Sternberg, a Mahopac resident who owns radiology centers in his civilian life, played college ball and currently runs the New York Hurricanes youth baseball team.
Part of the love for the game is when kids succeed and grow, Sternberg said. Ken Ferrer of Pleasantville High was just drafted by the Washington Nationals. Weve had four Hurricanes chosen.
Sternberg, who is a member of the Westchester County Baseball Umpires Association, said he was representing the team at the states.
We all work together well, Sternberg said. During games were always communicating and try to be sure we do the best job possible. These games are so important to the players and the schools and the families attending. Being able to do these games is a thrill for me.
Sternberg will likely receive no public recognition for his work this weekend, but he is proud to be one of the guys behind the mask in blue that do an invaluable service to the game.
I love the game -- each pitch and play is important, so Ill be out there to do the job, Stenberg said.
