LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Becky Shroyer hopes to pass on her love of reading to the kids of Chatsworth Avenue School as a volunteer for the school library this year.
The Larchmont resident and about a dozen other parents were introduced to the inner workings of the school library system and what role they could play at a brief orientation Thursday morning.
"It's an important way I can contribute, not just to my kids, but other kids," said Shroyer, whose son, Ben, is in Kindergarten and daughter, Emily, is in second grade.
She will be working with three other parents, including Rachel Stohler, whose daughter Leah, and son Lloyd, will share the same class as Mrakovcic's children respectively."We're getting to have library time with both of our kids," said Stohler, a Larchmont resident. "That can't happen too often."
Shroyer and Stohler will be joined by Jenny Liang Milwood and Jenny Cannaday on the Tuesday shift from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, each group of of parents were assigned to a particular day. Each group then decided who would work which weeks.
Laura Brune, head librarian at Chatsworth Avenue School, explained where everything is and how to use the circulation system. She also left parents with a few helpful tips, such as how many times to let a child renew books. Brune warned that the younger kids have renewed books as many as 18 times because they don't want to give it up. She suggested parents recommend another book by the same author to the child.
