Breaking News: Mamaroneck Resident Seriously Injured After Being Hit By Car

Phyllis Evans, 86, Former Larchmont Teacher's Aide

LARCHMONT, N.Y. – Phyllis Hewson Evans of Larchmont, formerly of Mamaroneck, died Monday, Aug. 20, at Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle following a stroke on Aug. 4. She was 86.

Evans was born April 17, 1926, in New Jersey to James and Helen Hewson. The family moved to Connecticut for a short time before settling in Mamaroneck. She attended Rye Neck schools, graduating in 1942.

After receiving a bachelor's degree from Middlebury College in Vermont, she worked as a social worker with the Westchester County Department of Family and Child Welfare.

In 1949 she married Sheldon Evans, and they lived in White Plains before moving to Larchmont in 1954. Evans then worked as a Welcome Wagon hostess, a math and science aide at Chatsworth Avenue School, and a library aide at Hommocks Middle School in Mamaroneck.

She was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Mamaroneck, where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She was a Sunday school teacher, chalice bearer, and a member of the Bible study group and book club. She also volunteered at the church thrift shop, pumpkin patch, Christmas fair and food pantry.

Evans enjoyed keeping in touch with her high school and college classmates, "church family" members, and community friends, and writing letters and cards. In addition to reading and keeping up with news and politics, Evans enjoyed traveling with her husband and family.

She spent time almost every summer in Rehoboth Beach, Del., and her favorite sports team was the New York Giants.

Evans is survived by her husband of 62 years, Sheldon; a brother, Roger; four children, Shelley (Marion Spillman) Evans of Elkton, Md., James (Terri) Evans of Falls Church, Va., Thomas (Joan) Evans of Ridgefield, Conn., and John (Karen) Evans of New Rochelle; and two grandchildren.

A funeral and memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at St. Thomas Church in Mamaroneck. Coxe & Graziano Funeral Home in Mamaroneck is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, United Way of Westchester and Putnam, Guiding Eyes for the Blind or a favorite charity.
