Larchmont Police Chief's Safety Tips for Holiday

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- A string of burglaries in late November led Larchmont Police Chief John Poleway to offer some safety tips for residents during this holiday season at the Larchmont Board of Trustees' last meeting.

Two homes on Old Colony Drive and Spanish Cove Road were broken into and robbed early in the morning on Thanksgiving, followed by another burglary on Ocean Avenue Nov. 30. To avoid such incidents, Poleway reminded residents to take common sense steps that will go a long way in protecting themselves and helping the Police Department.

1. Lock the windows and doors of your homes and cars that are in the driveway.

2. Do not leave valuables or electronic equipment in your car.

3. Turn you alarms on overnight and during the day when the house is unoccupied.

4. Make sure your alarm system is registered with the Police Department, as is mandated by village law.

"A failure to register that alarm can only potentially delay the response from our Police Department, and that's the last thing you want," Mayor Josh Mandell said.

Poleway also recommended residents stay vigilant and be aware of their surroundings while out in the village during the holidays.

"These are just simple steps that we can do on an every day basis that will help to maintain security at residences, and certainly goes a long way in helping the Police Department," Poleway said. "We don't want to make our residents, our vehicles or our property inviting to anybody with a nefarious intent."

As always, Poleway reminded residents that "If you see something, say something." To report something, call the New York State Terrorism Tips Line at 866-723-3697, or the Larchmont Police Department at 914-834-100.
