Blessed Sacrament Students Raise Money, Awareness

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Twenty students from New Rochelle’s Blessed Sacrament High School have been busy this year serving the community that surrounds them.

They have held car washes for charity and joined other Catholic schools in the Queen City of the Sound for a “Make A Difference Day.”

The students recently spread awareness of homelessness by spending the night outside the front doors of their school in boxes and tents during “Box Out Night." The event was a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Westchester to build homes for those in need.

Habitat of Westchester Executive Director Jim Killoran, who has received the help of the students many times throughout the year, said he is especially grateful for the work the most recent work the students did for a good cause.

“This makes me happy because I know the future is bright,” said Killoran.

Paul Schillace of the school’s guidance and religion department said helping the community and raising money is something that is part of the norm at Blessed Sacrament.

“That’s what we do,” he said.

Student Trevarna Simpson, who has participated in the school’s “Box Out Night” event before, said he always finds it a good experience.

“To give back, it’s great,” she said. “It’s different being out there. It gives you the experience."
