The turtle attempted to cross a highway in the Orange County town of Tuxedo on Sunday, May 29, according to The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) Division of Law Enforcement. The DEC said officers Lovgren and Schuck facilitated the turtle's safe crossing of the road and returned it to the Ramapo River. Former Police Chief In Area Dies At Age 48 A former Hudson Valley police chief has died just five years after his retirement. Former Tuxedo Police Chief Patrick Welsh died at the age of 48, officials said. A cause of death was not given. Welsh joined the department as a part-time dispatcher in February 1994, became a town officer in 1997, was promoted to sergeant in 2001 and to chief in 2009. He retired in 2016 from injuries sustained during the line of duty, city officials said at the time of his retirement. Welsh leaves behind a wife and four children. Services have not been announced.

During the 2018-2019 hunting season, New Yorkers hunted down 1,295 black bears statewide, a decrease of 125 from the previous year. Of the bears that were hunted, 349 were killed by bow, 66 were killed by a muzzleloader and 11 were taken by youth hunters. In the Southern Zone, 804 bears were killed, 60 percent of which were male, and 491 bears were killed in the Northern Zone. Multiple Injuries In I-87 Crash As All Three Vehicles Involved Roll Down Embankment Three people were injured during a multiple-vehicle crash on Interstate 87 in which all three vehicles involved went down an embankment. State police said the crash in Orange County took place around 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10 near Exit 15A southbound in Tuxedo. The crash occurred after three cars collided, and all rolled down an embankment.  At least one person was pinned in a vehicle and extricated by the Tuxedo Fire Department. Body Of Man Pulled From Lake In Harriman State Park The body of a possible drowning victim was pulled by dive teams from a lake in Harriman State Park near the border of Rockland and Orange counties on Monday morning. Lake Skannatati in Tuxedo was closed during the search. The man went underwater early Sunday afternoon. Thiells Fire Department divers were called to the scene after the Tuxedo Town Fire Department, Monroe Fire Department, Cronomer Valley Fire Department and  Stony Point Fire Department all responded. Shortly after 8:45 p.m. on March 24, state police troopers on patrol stopped Newburgh resident Humperto Borges, Jr., 41, on the interstate for a vehicle and traffic violation.
