LEWISBORO, N.Y. – The Town of Lewisboro has applied for a grant from the state Department of Transportation in hopes of purchasing a new bus for transporting its senior citizens.

The specialized bus, which contains things such as a wheelchair lift, costs approximately $60,000. The grant, known as 5310, will pay for 80 percent of that cost, which means the town would have to come up with about $12,000 for its share.

“We have to remember to put that $12,000, or whatever it winds up being, into the town budget,” said Lewisboro Supervisor Charles Duffy.

Linda Yurus, the town’s senior coordinator, said the final decision on whether Lewisboro gets the grant will be made sometime in November.

“If we get it, the money won’t come until January,” she said. “There are about 125 applications and they are lengthy. They rate each one and they are all different. Some towns may ask for multiple buses.”

Yuris said the town’s current bus is getting up there in age and is starting to experience some mechanical issues.

“The life expectancy for these buses is about eight years,” she said. “We bought ours in 2002, so ours is going on 10 years old.”
