SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. - Chip Andrus and his band will perform at the South Salem Presbyterian Church on Sunday at 4 p.m.

An accomplished composer and musician, Rev. Andrus is pastor of the church. He and his group will be playing folk/rock songs from his newest CD release, "The Place We're At," along with selections from other original recordings. The concert, which is free to the public, continues the series of musical events sponsored by the newly-established Center for Creative Arts and Spirituality at the church.

“Our concert series is an attempt to bring the community together around the different genres of music to enjoy the performances and have time for fellowship afterwards,” Andrus said.

A wine and cheese reception will follow the concert.

A songwriter and performer, Andrus has been playing music for nearly three decades. His music is described in his CD album notes as “a mix of acoustic folk, rock, bluegrass and jam band; down to earth art with a dash of sacred mystery. His music… will make you smile.”

Andrus’ songs about the world around us, the gifts of the people we know and love and the art of God's creation are filled with images “that we can be thankful for as we celebrate Thanksgiving in the coming week,” he said.

Andrus opened for the Little River Band one day before moving to South Salem. Since then he has performed twice at the Horse and Hound in South Salem and has also played at the other venues in New York and Connecticut.

A native of Arkansas, Chip Andrus grew up in the town of Prescott, 16 miles from where former President Bill Clinton lived. He has successfully combined his love of music with his ministry. He was recently installed as pastor of South Salem Presbyterian Church.

“Music has always been the basic thing I’ve done so I never thought of myself as not having a musical career,” he said. “Music and ministry are now inseparable in my mind. It’s about vocation, not just a career. ‘What gifts did God give you and how will you use them?’ is the question one must ask.”

Three more concerts are scheduled through the rest of the year: Common Ground Community concert on Dec. 4; Camerata d’Amici choral group on Dec. 11, and “Lessons and Carols” featuring Anthony Newman and Dec. 18.
