Lewisboro Harvest Fun Fest Celebrates Fall

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – The skies cleared and the sun beamed down Saturday just in time for Lewisboro’s annual Fun Fall Fest at Lewisboro Town Park.

“We really lucked out with the weather,” said Lewisboro Recreation Director, Dana Mayclim. “It’s normally freezing.

“The festival welcomes the fall,” she said. “It’s at the peak of the fall foliage. It brings out lots of younger families. Fireworks are for everyone, but this event is mostly for the young.”

Mayclim estimated several hundred people had already come to the fest by 1 p.m. and there were still two hours to go. She attributed the success to the hard work of Linda Yurus and Jennifer Blair, who “really organized the whole thing.”

Danielle Machado was at one of the long pumpkin-decorating tables with her 5-year-old, Tommy. “This is my 10th year,” she said. “Tommy is my fourth child and it’s fun to be here with just him.” Tommy, meanwhile, was busy searching the supply of decorations for appropriate pumpkin teeth.

All the decorating items were supplied by the town, as well as the vast pumpkin patch, where kids poke about to find their very own pumpkins. “It’s a long-standing tradition,” said Mayclim. 

So is the Guessing Game, where kids are asked to guess the weight of a giant pumpkin, as well as the weights of four different jars full of candy. The giant pumpkin is donated by Gossett Brothers Nursery. Winners of the guessing contests will have the items delivered to their homes. Last year’s winner wanted to keep her pumpkin in her bedroom, said Yurus, who was manning the guessing table, but somehow it ended up on the front porch.

Though Cathy Davis has lived in South Salem for seven years, this was her first visit to the Fall Fest with her children, Kyra, 9, and Liam, 6. Kyra is planning to be a bat for Halloween.

“Last year my mom made me a great bat costume, but I didn’t get to wear it because of the snow storm,” she said.

Her brother, Liam, will be a shark. “Last year I was a jellyfish,” he explained.

Music was provided by Squeaky Clean, a husband-and-wife team who cover songs for kids. Some examples are "Monster Mash" and Michael Jackson’s "Thriller."

In addition to their personally decorated pumpkins, all the kids left with goody bags – pencils, spider rings, tattoos and Halloween erasers, among other things.

Iris Fein, who recently moved to Cross River from Briarcliff Manor, was visiting the fest for the first time with her two children, aged 1½ and 4½. 

“We’re having a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s very family-oriented around here.”
