After nearly two decades, Purchase College President Thomas Schwarz, who has been in charge of the Westchester-based school since 2001 has announced his intention to retire at the end of next year’s academic year.

Schwarz announced last week that he will retire effective at the conclusion of the 2018-19 school year after 18 years at the helm of the college. Schwarz came to Purchase as an acting president in 2001 and was named to the position permanently two years later.

During his tenure at Purchase, Schwarz has been credited with improving graduation rates and nearly tripling the school’s endowment from an estimated $35 million to upwards of $87 million, school officials noted n a statement following his announcement. The school has also undergone a series of practical and aesthetic improvements, including the Center for Media, Film and Theatre, which remains under construction.

Following his retirement, Schwarz is expected to remain on Purchase’s board, where he will continue leading the college’s efforts to develop a senior living community on campus, according to officials.

“It is the students of Purchase College who have made this job so interesting and, quite frankly, so hard to leave," Schwarz said in a statement issued to students and staff. "I have had the pleasure of knowing many who have graduated and have drawn inspiration from their talents, successes, life stories and experiences."
