WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Brittni Lai owned the court Thursday, running end to end and scoring 25 points to lead the Irvington girls to 77-52 victory over Mount Vernon in the girls championship game of the 13th Slam Dunk Tournament at the Westchester County Center.
This is definitely a good tournament to play because it comes during the break and we clicked here last year at the same time, said Lai, who was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player for the second year, last year as Co-MVP with teammate Alexis Martins. Mount Vernon has quickness and size inside and it is a good test to play them here.
Lai hit three long-range three-pointers and a total of 21 points in the first half before getting her third foul with two minutes left in the half and taking a seat on the bench to the relief of the Knights defenders who could not stop the junior guard. The Bulldogs led 43-28 at halftime.
Martins was a force herself, scoring 11 of her 23 points in the first half while grabbing six rebounds for the Bulldogs, who won their second straight Slam Dunk trophy and ran their overall record to 8-0.
We usually practice through the holiday and no one goes away, so having a tournament like Slam Dunk to play is a good thing for us, Martins said.
Luburdia Gordon scored a team-high 20 points and had 19 rebounds and teammate Sade King added 17 points and three assists for Mount Vernon.
Marley Giddins had a double-double of 13 point and 11 rebounds and Alyssa DiCampli contributed 10 points and six rebounds.
We want to improve our defense as we go into the next part of the season and the Slam Dunk offers a great opportunity to work on things against good teams, Irvington coach Gina Maher said.
