Irvington, Kennedy Meet in Class B Semifinal

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – Irvington’s march to a third consecutive Section 1 Class B girls’ basketball title continues Tuesday with a challenge by Kennedy Catholic in an 8:15 p.m. tipoff at the Westchester County Center.

Irvington (18-1), the top seed and two-time defending Section 1 and New York State Class B champion, is the big favorite to win a third straight title with the underdog Lady Gaels looking for the upset. The Bulldogs lone loss came against top-seeded Class AA favorite Ossining.

The Bulldogs feature a triple-threat offense in Brittni Lai, Marley Giddins and Alexis Martins and a cast of top-notch high school players who know how to win and implement coach Gina Maher’s game plan to perfection. Laurilyn Gelardi and Jaime Gelardi, Lauren Chafizadeh, Alyssa DiCampli and a deep bench give the Bulldogs an edge against most teams.

The fourth-seeded Gaels (13-6) have been improving through the regular season winning 11 of 13 games after going 2-4 in their first six games.

Sara Dowd, Leah Greene and Kiera Hennessey each scored nine points in a balanced offense that earned the Gaels a thrilling 42-8 victory over Woodlands in the quarterfinals. Shayna Gaskin, Catherine Purdy, Kaitlyn Knox and Megan Weidenhammer add depth to the lineup.

This one should go to the Bulldogs unless the Gaels can find a defense that can keep the game close.
