As part of the assembly, students learned the foundation of women's rights movement during the the 1890s through the 1920s, as women began to demand the right to vote. A second wave of the women's rights movement took hold in the 1970s, and President Jimmy Carter declared National Women's History Week in 1980, which was expanded later by Congress to include the entire month of March.

Among the performances during the assembly were the WMS jazz band's rendition of Aretha Franklin's "Respect" and a rousing vocal performance of Selena Gomez's "Who Says," an inspiration for many young women.
