Joining the two pumping stations is a vital infrastructure upgrade and will allow each station to complement the other’s supply capabilities, better ensure sufficient water volume and pressure during periods of peak demand, and provide a continuous water supply when either station is undergoing maintenance.
Interconnecting the two pumping stations is a complex engineering initiative. The project will require road construction, along the selected route, to place the piping underground. As with any project of this scale, there are many factors that need to be balanced, such as the:
- Most efficient procedure from a construction standpoint
- Most cost-efficient process
- Least disruptive route to residents while in their homes and when traveling through the construction area; traffic; the environment; and existing utilities already located over, under, or near any planned route.
Funding for the interconnect project is expected to be accomplished through bonds issued by the Town for the Water District. The use of bonds allows the Town to take advantage of funding large projects over a longer period of time at favorable interest rates. By leveraging lower cost funding, the town is able to minimize future water rate increases. The Town is also engaged with another water district in an attempt to achieve mutually beneficial results from upgrades to the Town of Greenburgh's Water District infrastructure, according to Town Supervisor Paul Feiner.
