Starting on Saturday, visitors at the Greenburgh Nature Center will have a chance to get up close and personal with hundreds of varieties of butterflies.
GNC's second annual butterfly exhibit, which opens Saturday and runs through September 30, will be located in the walk-through greenhouse and is free with general admission. Director of Marketing Vicki Seiden Sherman said last year's exhibit was a popular attraction and expects similar interest the second time around. "It's a lovely way to get up close with the butterflies. Sometimes they'll land on you. It's very intimate," she said.
Besides watching such buterflies as Monarchs, Painted Ladies and Swallowtails flutter from blossom to blossom in search of nourishing nectar, visitors will learn about the life cycle of a butterfly and discover the unique relationship between butterflies and specific plants.
GNC, a 33-acre nature preserve with trails, gardens, a pond and indoor and outdoor animal exhibits, is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For further information, call (914) 723-3470 or visit www.greenburghnaturecenter.org.
