The fire broke out on Wednesday, Jan. 24 around 3 p.m. at a residence in Somers on Wood Street, the Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department announced on Saturday, Jan. 27.  According to the department, which provided mutual aid during the incident, a small fire broke out on the first floor of the residence but was quickly put out.  The cause of the blaze was later determined to be an off-brand rechargeable battery, fire…

The beloved statue in front of The Elephant Hotel in Somers, known as Old Bet, was taken down because officials discovered that it was beginning to crack, Town Supervisor Robert Scorrano said on Tuesday, July 25.  The statue dates back to 1827 when a gilt wood replica of an elephant was installed on iron scrollwork on top of a granite shaft in front of the hotel, which was built between 1820 and 1825 and is located at 335 US-202. Former Detective Sergeant From Hudson Valley Dies: 'Always There To Help' A former detective sergeant from Northern Westchester who was dedicated to helping people any way he could has died.  Joseph Cindrich of Somers died on Thursday, March 16 at the age of 69, according to his obituary.  Born in 1953, Cindrich began his policing career with the Rye Police Department in 1978, serving there for two years before then joining the New Castle Police Department in 1980.  There, he stayed for nearly 20 years before retiring in 1998. Man Nabbed With Fentanyl, Crack Cocaine In Hudson Valley, Authorities Say A man was arrested on narcotics charges during a routine traffic stop in the region. Northern Westchester resident William E. Felling, age 40, of Somers, was arrested on Friday, Sept. 2 in Putnam County on Route 6 in the town of Southeast. During the stop an investigation found Felling was in possession of a quantity of fentanyl and crack cocaine, said Putnam County Sheriff Kevin J. McConville. Felling was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was released on his own recognizance, pending a return court date on Thursday, Sept. 15.
