‘Shameful, Cowardly’: Cancer-Stricken Dog Abandoned Along Highway In Region
Police in the region are asking for help in solving a heartbreaking case of animal abuse involving a sick dog. Columbia County Sheriff’s officials said the Cane Corso, now named Barney, was found abandoned on the side of Route 23 in the hamlet of Craryville on Thursday, Jan. 25. A passerby spotted the animal and assumed it had been struck by a car because it couldn’t put any weight on one of its front legs. A winning lottery ticket worth over $30,000 was sold at a convenience store in the region. The top-prize winning Take 5 ticket, worth $34,210, was sold in Columbia County at the Sunoco Mart in Copake, located at 1678 Church Street. It was sold for the evening drawing held on Saturday, Sept. 23, New York Lottery announced. Take 5 numbers are drawn from a field of one through 39. The drawing is televised twice daily at 2:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Winners have one year from the drawing date to claim their prize money. Players can check their numbers on the New York Lottery website.

Man From Region Sexually Abused Child, Sent Victim 'Indecent Material,' Police Say
A 22-year-old man from the region is facing charges after he allegedly sexually abused a child, authorities said. Columbia County resident Steven Kipp, of the town of Copake, was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 22 following an investigation by State Police. Troopers received a tip about possible sex crimes against a child in the town of Copake in January 2023. Investigators determined that Kipp sent “indecent material” and sexually abused a child under the age of 15, police said. A Hudson Valley family already grappling with their 6-year-old daughter’s cancer diagnosis has been jolted by a new tragedy. Dutchess County resident Michael Manetta, age 54, was killed in a motorcycle crash in Columbia County on Sunday, July 31, New York State Police said. A preliminary investigation found that Manetta, of Red Hook, was riding his motorcycle on Route 7A in the town of Copake shortly before 11 a.m. when a driver cut him off while making a left turn. A local man is facing charges for allegedly burglarizing a Columbia County home and breaking windows. New York State Police troopers were called to a home in Copake on Friday, July 1, after the victim returned home and saw that someone had broken in and damaged windows. Investigators determined that the culprit was Ancram resident Arnold Albright Jr., age 54, who had violated an order of protection, police said. A COVID-19 outbreak at an upstate New York summer sleepaway camp has resulted in 31 confirmed positive cases with many campers returning home. Camp Pontiac is located in Copake, New York, in Columbia County, in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains. It's a seven-week camp for boys and girls aged 7 to 16 from all over the country.
